Good Backwards World Building: In the Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery mobile game, your player character must learn the charm Silencio, which causes the target to temporarily be unable to make any sound, during their fifth year at Hogwarts. During the class, it is revealed that one of the side effects of a failed Silencio charm is for the target of the spell to begin to swell uncontrollably. For players who are clever and remember the books, this will ring a bell- it was never explained why Aunt Marge in The Prisoner of Azkaban started swelling up when Harry got angry, only that he accidentally did magic. This reveal shows that in anger, his subconscious was likely trying to “shut her up”, causing a mis-cast Silencio charm, and therefore the side-effect of swelling. The reveal doesn’t change anything about the characters or their motivations, or add anything in particular to the plot. It’s just a neat bit of trivia.

Bad Backwards World Building: JKR tweets that [x] was part of [x minority group], even though there was no indication of such in the text, simply because it adds representation in hindsight.

I feel like the line between “fluffy uwu self care” and “get your shit together self care” is thinner than people seem to think. Like, sitting in a quiet space with a book and maybe some twinkly fairy lights gives me the spoons to go call my damn doctor like I’ve been meaning to. Bath bombs or shower steamers make me feel content and/or sparkly, which gives me confidence to go out in public. (Plus, I bathed.) I dye my hair funky colors so if I feel like people are staring at me I can say it’s at that instead of whatever my anxiety wants it to be. 

The two are not mutually exclusive, is what I’m getting at, and I never see that mentioned, just either “self care is being nice to yourself” or “self care is kicking yourself in the ass to function for a few hours”. Kick yourself in the ass with niceness.

Ways to play a bard if you, the player, have no charisma:

• Pick a catch phrase. Whenever you roll intimidation or persuasion, just say it with different inflections. Bonus points if it makes no sense in either context.
• Get a shitty cheap recorder or kazoo, and use that for all of your charisma based checks. All of them.
• Your character doesn’t speak common. They’re forced to communicate through elaborate gestures and interpretive dances. Are you trying to talk to someone through a door? Well i guess you’re shit out of luck
• Alternatively, your character can’t speak at all. Strong silent type? Maybe. Or maybe you communicate through a series of eyebrow wiggles.

Ive been toying with the idea that the bard doesn’t play any instruments. Their focus is 100% their looks. Imagine Fabio the elf with his long flowing hair ripping open his shirt and yelling at you for inspiration. Vicious mockery telling the enemy they could never have them and watching their hopes and dreams melt. Just a ridiculously attractive char playing on your heart strings and doing bard stuff all with their looks.
